Since the early 1900’s the Rafanelli family has been growing grapes and making wine in the Dry Creek Valley. Four generations later they are still keeping with the tradition, growing premium grapes and producing world class wines. The winery is small, and being family owned and operated, production is limited, with the focus on quality not quantity! The family prides themselves on producing consistently exceptional wines year in and year out, specializing in some of the finest Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.

After purchasing the historic Cyrus Alexander homestead, Harry and Maggie Wetzel strived to create a thriving agricultural lifestyle on the property. They raised their children along with their vines in Alexander Valley, providing inspiration and encouragement as they developed the estate together. We dreamed of owning a vineyard and making wine since we first met in 1983. It took us a decade before we’d plant our first vine, and then another six years before we’d find this magnificent vineyard in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley. Along the way we learned a lot! Most importantly, that wine is a source of endless discovery and rich friendships.
Amista translates as “it makes friends” and in our experience creating this winery has been all about friendship. At each step in our journey, we’ve had friends encouraging, guiding and helping us realize our dream of owning a winery. A native of Sonoma County, Rick first became involved with wine on the bottling line at Sebastiani Vineyards in 1975, at the tender age of 20. Over the years he began honing his winemaking skills, apprenticing with some of the best in the business, including Doug Nalle, Grady Wann, John Kongsgaard and Mike Duffy. At the same time, he often found himself straddling a potter’s wheel, crafting sensual amphorae — clay jars used by ancient Greeks and Romans to store wine.
A native of Sonoma County, Rick first became involved with wine on the bottling line at Sebastiani Vineyards in 1975, at the tender age of 20.
