Sebastopol, CA (November 15, 2017) – Last week, winemaker Paul Hobbs acquired a 45-acre cabernet sauvignon vineyard, located four miles northeast of the town of Healdsburg along the Russian River, in the heart of the Alexander Valley American Viticultural Area.

Situated in the southern narrows of the Alexander Valley, the site has a peak elevation of 185 feet, with a gentle downward slope to 160 feet, while overlooking the southwest bank of the Russian River. The alluvial soils are composed of free draining Cortina gravelly loam and Zamora silty clay loam, and are particularly well-suited for growing cabernet sauvignon vines. Coupled with the site’s significant diurnal temperature ‘shift’—resulting from cold air off the Pacific Ocean being carried in along the Russian River thereby mitigating daytime heat trapped by the Mayacamas Mountains immediately to the east—the parcel exhibits all the makings for growing superlative cab.

“The site is exceedingly promising and offers all the natural elements key to making exceptional cabernets” says Hobbs. “It’s a tremendous opportunity to explore the possibilities of cabernet sauvignon in this appellation, and to push quality to new levels.”

Hobbs will apply his broad experience with sustainable farming and detailed vineyard management practices to harness the essence of the new estate vineyard, which will serve to underpin the CrossBarn Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon program. Launched in 2000, CrossBarn wines offer a lively and youthful expression of fruit sourced from the finest vineyards in Sonoma and Napa.

After Hobbs established his winemaking career in the Napa Valley in the 1970s, he decided to make his home in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. Since then, Hobbs has built a collection of esteemed estates in Sonoma and Napa: Katherine Lindsay (1998, home to Paul Hobbs Winery), Edward James (2006), Ross Station (2007), Ellen Lane (2007), Watertrough Road (2013) and Feeney Ranch (2014) in the Russian River Valley; Nathan Coombs (2012) in Coombsville, Napa Valley and, Goldrock in the ‘true’ Sonoma Coast AVA (2016).
