Betsy and Bill Nachbaur are passionate about making “field-blended” wines that express the special character of their Alegria Vineyards. Complementary grape varieties are planted and picked together and co-fermented, not kept apart for blending later. This old-fashioned practice produces exceptionally complex wines. “Alegria” means happiness and joy; which describes how the Nachbaurs feel about their unique, sustainably-farmed vineyards. Most of the vines that produce Acorn’s famous Alegria Heritage Vines Zinfandel date back to 1890. Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, and ten other varieties in the field blend add complexity to the wine. Acorn’s Sangiovese includes seven different clones of Sangiovese field-blended with two other Tuscan varieties, Canaiolo and Mammolo. Their Dolcetto is a field blend of four clones of Dolcetto along with two other Piedmont varieties, Barbera and Freisa. Acorn’s Syrah is made from five clones of Syrah blended with Viognier. Their Cabernet Franc includes small amounts of the Bordeaux varieties, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Acorn’s Medley is a totally unique blend of field blends from all over the 26-acre vineyards that showcases the unique qualities of each vintage.
